From growing cotton to dyeing fabrics and finishing garments, water is a vital component in the production of clothing. Unfortunately, the fashion industry is one of the biggest polluters of water, with many of its practices contributing to the depletion and contamination of this vital resource. In this era of climate change and environmental degradation, it's crucial that we take a closer look at the impact of water use in the fashion industry and explore sustainable solutions to reduce our water footprint.

According to the United Nations, the fashion industry is responsible for around 20% of global wastewater, and uses 1.5 trillion liters of water annually. This is equivalent to the water needed for 32 million people to live for a year. Additionally, the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) reports that cotton, one of the most commonly used materials in clothing, requires an enormous amount of water to grow. We’ll get to that in a minute.

How is the use of water in the fashion industry contributes to climate change?

- Water Scarcity
The fashion industry uses a large amount of water in the production of textiles, such as cotton and polyester. In regions where water is scarce, the overuse of water for the fashion industry can lead to water scarcity, which in turn can lead to conflicts over water resources, and can cause crops to fail, affecting food security.

- Water Pollution
The fashion industry also produces a lot of waste water that contains chemicals and pollutants from the production process, such as dyes, pesticides, and other chemicals. This waste water can contaminate local water resources, making them unsafe for drinking, irrigation, and other uses.

- Changes in Water Cycle
The fashion industry's use of water can also disrupt the water cycle by altering natural water flow patterns, which can lead to changes in precipitation, temperature, and evaporation patterns. These changes can result in increased frequency and severity of droughts and floods, putting communities at risk.

- Energy Consumption
The fashion industry consumes a lot of energy in the production of textiles, transportation, and storage. A lot of this energy is used to pump water from sources, treat it, and then dispose of it. This energy consumption contributes to greenhouse gas emissions, which leads to global warming and climate change.

- Deforestation
The fashion industry's use of water is also linked to deforestation. Forests play a vital role in regulating the water cycle and maintaining the balance of water resources. When forests are removed, it can lead to changes in precipitation, temperature, and evaporation patterns, which can lead to water scarcity, flooding, and droughts, and it can also contribute to the overall deforestation problem.

Now, let’s put things into perspective and look at how much water does a single cotton t-shirt need, in comparison to organic cotton

A conventional cotton t-shirt requires a significant amount of water to produce. It is estimated that it takes around 2,700 liters of water to produce one conventional cotton t-shirt, which is roughly the amount of water one person drinks in three years! This is because cotton is a water-intensive crop that requires irrigation to grow.

In comparison, organic cotton requires less water to produce. Organic cotton is grown using methods that conserve water and reduce the need for irrigation. It is estimated that organic cotton requires about 91% less water to produce compared to conventional cotton. This is because organic cotton is grown using rainwater and crop rotation instead of irrigation. Additionally, organic cotton farming prohibits the use of synthetic fertilizers and pesticides which can pollute the water and make it harder to be used for irrigation or other purposes.

But, why are organic products more expensive than non-organic products?
Organic products, including clothing made from organic cotton, can often be more expensive than non-organic products. This is because organic farming methods are more labor-intensive and require more resources than conventional farming methods.

Organic farmers are also required to meet strict certification standards, which can add to the cost of production. Additionally, the demand for organic products is still relatively low compared to non-organic products, which means that organic farmers may not be able to scale their production as efficiently as non-organic farmers, leading to higher prices.

However, it is worth noting that organic products often have a longer lifespan, better quality, and are environmentally and socially responsible. By investing in organic products, consumers can contribute to sustainable agriculture, and support farmers who use environmentally friendly and ethical practices.

It is also worth noting that the cost of organic products varies depending on the product, the location, and the brand. Some companies may charge more for organic products as a way to profit from the "organic" label, while others may charge a fair price that reflects the true cost of production. Consumers can also look for sales and discounts, as well as purchase products in bulk to reduce the overall cost.

There are several sustainable solutions that the fashion industry can implement to reduce their water footprint:

- Adopting water-efficient technologies and practices in production processes, such as using low-water or waterless dyeing techniques, and reducing the amount of water used in garment washing and finishing.

- Using recycled water in manufacturing processes to reduce the amount of freshwater required.

- Choosing sustainable materials that require less water to produce, such as organic cotton, hemp, or recycled polyester.

- Encouraging consumers to use sustainable washing practices, such as washing clothes in cold water and air drying them, to reduce the overall water footprint of clothing.

- Implementing circular economy models that promote the recycling and repurposing of clothing, reducing the need for new clothes to be produced and therefore, reducing the amount of water needed in production.

By implementing these solutions and working towards more sustainable practices, the fashion industry can reduce their water footprint and make a positive impact on the environment.

A recent report by the Ellen MacArthur Foundation found that by 2050, the fashion industry is projected to use up to 25% of the world's carbon budget.
