As consumer advocacy grows and more people prioritize ethics in their fashion choices, transparency in the way companies conduct their businesses breeds trust. Information about the steps they take to make their products and practice sustainable should be available for the public in order for us to be able to make.

Consumers today have higher standards than ever before. We not only consider the look and price of a product but also its integrity and impact on our environment and the hardworking labor force.

We know that it can be hard to keep track of what is or isn't sustainable in the fashion industry, specially when companies use the term "Sustainable" very loosely. But how can we tell if a fashion brand is truly sustainable?? Brands need to change the way their clothes are sourced, produced and consumed, and also be upfront about the impact of their operations with their customers.

We're here to help!

We've compiled this list of ways you can make sure you're supporting sustainable practices when you shop:

1) Look for Fair Trade Certified™ labels on clothing items (including shoes!) such as The Fairtrade Mark and The World Fair Trade Organization certificates. These certifications provide consumers with a way to identify products that have been produced in a fair and sustainable manner. This means that the item was made by workers who were paid fair wages and work in safe conditions.

2) Look for Sustainable or Ethical Certification, these certificates ensure that products are made with consideration to people and the planet, such as the Social Accountability International certification, The Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS), Soil Association Organic, B Corp and many other similar certifications.

3) Check out brands with a proven commitment to sustainability. We recommend People Tree, Patagonia, Rapanui, and Veja —These are just a few examples of sustainable fashion brands in the UK. There are many other great brands out there, so it's always worth doing some research to find a brand that aligns with your values.

4) Look for products made from organic materials (such as cotton). Organic cotton is grown without pesticides or fertilizers, so it's better for both people and the environment! Also, clothing made from synthetic materials and plastics is often produced with toxic chemicals that can harm both people and the planet, so watch out for those! Choose natural fabrics like linen, hemp and bamboo. These materials are sustainable, durable and breathable.

5) Does the company have a mission or goal? Having goal or mission helps a brand to define its purpose and values, and provides a framework for making decisions and taking actions that align with its commitment to sustainability. By also communicating these values to its customers and stakeholders, sustainable brands can help build trust and loyalty among consumers who are looking for brands that are sustainable. Usually you can find this information on the company's "About" page. Some brands might even issue an annual report. See if they provide an Annual Sustainability Report.

6) Look for brands that donate a portion of sales to charity or sustainability causes, such as Lucy & Yak (one of our favourites!), TALA, Beaumont Organic and RÆBURN. There are many other great brands out there, so it's always worth doing some research to find a brand that aligns with your values and supports causes that you care about.

7) If you find it a bit challenging to give up fast fashion, check out brands that are committed to transparency in their supply chains—they tell you where their clothes come from so that you can make informed decisions about what to buy. Or visit secondhand or vintage shops. This helps you save money and reduce waste—plus it keeps those clothes out of landfills. If your favorite brand doesn't have a sustainable or fair trade option, send them an email letting them know you want more options like that!

It is important for companies to disclose all relevant details about their products. They should transparently share information about the sourcing of their materials, their business practices, financial viability, and the treatment of their workforce. Additionally, companies must take into account the social and environmental consequences of their operations and disclose that information as well.

We're not all going to change overnight, but we can all be mindful of the choices we make with regards to fashion. From shopping consciously and making better-informed decisions regarding the brands we buy from, to making smart choices about what we ultimately wear on our bodies – there are plenty of sustainable fashion options out there for the discerning consumer.

With methods of production so inefficient, the fashion industry is taking a big hit to the environment, and there's a growing awareness in consumers. A change will come, but both brands and consumers need to do their part in order for sustainability to become a reality.
